Purpose

When I saw this tree I thought it looked like it had a face in it, so the purpose of this image was to make it look more scary and enhance the illusion of a skull being trapped inside the tree.

Techniques used

To make the photo darker and more like night a combination of a color overlay effect, a hue/saturation adjustment layer and brightness/contrast adjustment layer was used.

The original image was duplicated and a layer mask was added to hide the background on this layer. The tree was not cut out by use of selection tools but just painted visible with use of soft brushes. An outer glow effect was added to make the tree stand out from the background. The clone stamp was used to edit the inside of the tree and make the colors more alike.

The skull image was transformed using the free transform tool to make it fit into the hole of the tree. The blending mode was set to 'soft light' to make it blend in nicely and a layer mask was used to hide everything outside the hole of the tree. A dark outer glow effect was added to make the hole seem darker and deeper.

The tree and the skull were converted to a smart object and an unsharp mask was applied to enhance the overall quality. Finally a hue/saturation adjustment layer and a curve adjustment layer were applied to make the final color corrections.
